Ethics - Mindfulness & Loving Kindness; Bringing Greater Awareness to the Client-Therapist Relationship

Introduction:
In massage therapy developing a clear understanding of professional ethics is of the utmost importance for its practitioners. It is for this reason that most states require therapists to receive reoccurring continuing education on the topic in order to renew licensure. One of the reasons for this requirement is that massage therapy is very different than any other profession in that we deal with our clients in a unique and vulnerable setting. In addition to the fact that our clients are disrobed, what we do involves touch, not always limited to the physical body. As Dean Juhan states in his book, Job’s Body, “to touch the surface is to stir the depths”. We touch the body, mind and spirit of our clients’ each day in our practice. Understanding and implementing professional ethical behavior is what allows us to serve our clients in a healthy, therapeutic way. Adhering to professional ethical behavior is essential to being a successful massage practitioner.
In this 6-hour course we will discuss the ethical Buddhist principles of Mindfulness and Loving Kindness in the therapy room. There will be reflection exercises and meditation exercises throughout the course. These are intended to help you relate what you have read to your practice and/or personal experiences. You will also receive a 30 question post course exam. You are free to use the material during your exam. Once your exam is submitted you will receive a certificate of achievement given that you pass the exam with a percentage of 70 or higher. Good luck and enjoy the course!.
